Tariff Increase on Upholstered Furniture, Kitchen Cabinets Delayed

The Trump administration has delayed tariff increases affecting upholstered furniture, vanities, and kitchen cabinets by one year. The increases were set to take effect on Jan 1, 2026 before a new presidential proclamation was signed on Dec. 31, 2025. The current 25% import tariffs on certain upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities remain in effect.

The original September 29 proclamation establishing new tariffs and increase schedule is detailed as follows:

Sept. 29, 2025- The Trump administration has announced by proclamation a new set of global tariffs to be applied to lumber, kitchen cabinets, and other wood products entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse after 12:01EST, October 14th.

The presidential action establishes the following Section 232 tariff rates on US imports:

• 10% global tariff on imports of softwood lumber.
• 25% global tariff on certain upholstered furniture (to increase to 30% on. Jan. 1)
• 25% global tariff on kitchen cabinets and vanities (to increase to 50% on Jan. 1)

Products of countries with newly established trade deals will not be subject to the new tariffs. Section 232 tariffs on wood imports from the U.K. will not exceed 10%, while the combined Section 232 tariff and Most-Favored Nation tariff on subject wood imports from the E.U. and Japan will not exceed 15%. Products that are not subject to the Section 232 tariffs will generally be subject to reciprocal tariffs.

An annex to the proclamation including tariff subheadings subject to the increase can be found here.
