Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Extended to Derivative Products

President Donald Trump has announced by proclamation that new tariffs will go into effect on steel and aluminum derivative products effective February 8, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. These products include steel nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples, and similar articles.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, import volumes of steel and aluminum derivative products spiked following the implementation of ad valorem tariffs on steel and aluminum. The spike in imports of these products is seen as an effort to circumvent the higher tariffs. In response, President Trump is expanding the additional tariffs to include certain aluminum derivative products (10% tariff) and steel derivative products (25% tariff).
